A long-standing practice in clinical and developmental psychology research on childhood maltreatment has been to consider prospective, official court records to be the gold standard measure of childhood maltreatment and to give less weight to adults’ retrospective self-reports of childhood maltreatment, sometimes even treating this data source as invalid. We argue that both formats of assessment – prospective and retrospective – provide important information on childhood maltreatment. Prospective data drawn from court records should not necessarily be considered the superior format, especially considering evidence of structural racism in child welfare. Part I overviews current maltreatment definitions in the context of the developmental psychopathology (DP) framework that has guided maltreatment research for over 40 years. Part II describes the ongoing debate about the disproportionalities of minoritized children at multiple decision-making stages of the child welfare system and the role that racism plays in many minoritized families’ experience of this system. Part III offers alternative interpretations for the lack of concordance between prospective, official records of childhood maltreatment and retrospective self-reports, and for the differential associations between each format of data with health outcomes. Moving forward, we recommend that future DP research on childhood maltreatment apply more inclusive, diversity and equity-informed approaches when assessing and interpreting the effects of childhood maltreatment on lifespan and intergenerational outcomes. We encourage future generations of DP scholars to use assessment methods that affirm the lived experiences of individuals and families who have directly experienced maltreatment and the child welfare system.

Friendships are a potential factor that influence maltreated children’s risk for psychopathology. This systematic review examined (1) how friendships influence the association between child maltreatment and psychopathology and (2) developmental differences in how friendships influence this association. Four databases were searched. Inclusion criteria were primary study, quantitative, measures of maltreatment and friendship up to the age of 18 years, measures of psychopathology up to the age of 24 years, and a non-maltreated sample. Exclusion criteria were qualitative, reviews or meta-analyses, no distinction between maltreatment and other trauma, and no differentiation between friendships and other support. Risk of bias was assessed. Data were narratively synthesized. Two hundred thirty-five articles were retrieved for full review. Fourteen met inclusion criteria (N = 98,676 participants). Eleven of the fourteen studies found that some aspect of friendships influenced the association between maltreatment and psychopathology, with positive qualities generally decreasing risk and negative qualities increasing risk for psychopathology. However, peer support exacerbated maltreated children’s risk for psychopathology in two studies. Only three studies assessed friendship prior to adolescence, which precluded conclusions regarding developmental differences. Future research should consider developmental differences and use findings and validated measures from the peer relations literature to better understand how friendships influence maltreated youth’s vulnerability to psychopathology.

Repeated antigen testing of 12 severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)–positive nursing home residents using Abbott BinaxNOW identified 9 of 9 (100%) culture-positive specimens up to 6 days after initial positive test. Antigen positivity lasted 2–24 days. Antigen positivity might last beyond the infectious period, but it was reliable in residents with evidence of early infection.

Objectives
We sought to assess the presence and reporting quality of peer-reviewed literature concerning the accuracy, precision, and reliability of home monitoring technologies for vital signs and glucose determinations in older adult populations.
MethodsA narrative literature review was undertaken searching the databases Medline, Embase, and Compendex. Peer-reviewed publications with keywords related to vital signs, monitoring devices and technologies, independent living, and older adults were searched. Publications between the years 2012 and 2018 were included. Two reviewers independently conducted title and abstract screening, and four reviewers independently undertook full-text screening and data extraction with all disagreements resolved through discussion and consensus.
ResultsTwo hundred nine articles were included. Our review showed limited assessment and low-quality reporting of evidence concerning the accuracy, precision, and reliability of home monitoring technologies. Of 209 articles describing a relevant device, only 45 percent (n = 95) provided a citation or some evidence to support their validation claim. Of forty-eight articles that described the use of a comparator device, 65 percent (n = 31) used low-quality statistical methods, 23 percent (n = 11) used moderate-quality statistical methods, and only 12 percent (n = 6) used high-quality statistical methods.
ConclusionsOur review found that current validity claims were based on low-quality assessments that do not provide the necessary confidence needed by clinicians for medical decision-making purposes. This narrative review highlights the need for standardized health technology reporting to increase health practitioner confidence in these devices, support the appropriate adoption of such devices within the healthcare system, and improve health outcomes.

Summary
The study of illuminated manuscripts has grown steadily since the staging by Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell of the first exhibition devoted to them, held at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in London in 1908. That exhibition stemmed from Cockerell’s background as a collector, curator and connoisseur, in a tradition that stretched back to his time assisting John Ruskin, and indeed beyond, to the post-Reformation period, when the bibliophiles Archbishop Matthew Parker and Sir Robert Cotton initiated revived appreciation of the manuscripts’ aesthetic appeal. Illumination has accordingly entered the canon of art-historical studies, but has often teetered uneasily on the cusp between the fine and decorative arts. Figural narrative and established iconographies were the principal areas of interest at first – effectively, viewing illuminations as paintings in miniature. Meanwhile, study of the texts contained in such books continued apace, and the work of deciphering them through the formal and typological analysis of their scripts (palaeography) commenced in earnest with the publication of Jean Mabillon’s De re diplomatica in 1681. An appreciation of the significance of the manuscripts’ physical construction was inaugurated by Bernard de Montfaucon in his Palaeographia graeca of 1708 and elevated to disciplinary status as ‘codicology’ with the work of scholars such as Destrez and Delaissé during the mid-twentieth century.
In recent decades, a more holistic approach has evolved, with scholars collaborating or ranging across these disciplines to form a more rounded view of the socio-historical context of such complex artefacts, and with the establishment of book history as a new arrow in the quiver of academe. A fuller appreciation has also grown of the sophisticated and complex ways in which text and image inter-relate, and of the essential roles of navigation, articulation and interpretation played by what has traditionally been seen – sometimes rather pejoratively – as ‘decoration’, whether major or minor. The application of neuropsychological and cognitive theories to the exploration of medieval art has also rendered us more receptive to the semiotics and symbolism of abstract graphic forms and to the artistic interplay between iconic and aniconic, figurative and abstract. The cognitive strategies of the medievals themselves have also been examined through the application of their own early tools, such as exegesis, allegory, tropology, typology and multivalence.

Summary
Suites of illumination introducing the gospels form a distinctive part of the Insular contribution to the medieval book (Fig. 1). Such decoration helped the reader to navigate the text visually, symbolically and cognitively, and might assist in penetrating its deeper meaning and interpretation. These images, in which letters, ornament and illustration converge, are complex vehicles of communication. They could serve as iconic places of assembly for ‘communities of reading’, whose members accessed and were affected by them in different ways. In this chapter I shall examine some such images (including examples from the Lindisfarne Gospels, the St Chad Gospels and the Book of Cerne, the Book of Kells and manuscripts from Armagh), which together demonstrate varied functions and contexts of reception – liturgical, cultic, theological, legal, didactic and devotional. I shall also explore some of the strategies of reading that may be deployed in comprehending and assessing them.
The Celtic and Germanic converts of early medieval northern Europe possessed long traditions, stretching into prehistory, for signalling power, status, descent and belief through ornament, sign and symbol. Among the most developed and enigmatic of these communication systems were the Pictish symbols – a series of stylized glyphs based largely upon animal and artefact forms which reflect interaction between the indigenous prehistoric populace of much of what is now Scotland and the antique world. These may date from as early as the late Roman period until after Alba assumed its status as a unified kingdom, incorporating the Irish (Scotti) settlers, in the mid-ninth century. Following the reform of the Pictish Church, initiated by King Nechtan’s rapprochement with Northumbria at the beginning of the eighth century, these symbols, which, in the absence of a Pictish Rosetta stone, have yet to be convincingly deciphered, were combined with the more familiar repertoire of biblical and ruler imagery and of Insular ornament and Christian symbols, seen on complex monuments such as the Aberlemno Churchyard Cross-Slab (Forfarshire).
Thus, the visual semiotics of a strategically sited monument (perhaps designed, in the eighth century, to commemorate the Pictish victory over Northumbria at the Battle of Nechtanesmere in 685) proclaim a history of complex internecine relations.

Summary
In ad 731, in the fifty-ninth year of his life, Bede concluded his Ecclesiastical History of the English People with an autobiographical note in which he stated that 'it has always been my delight to learn or to teach or to write' (v. 24, p. 567). The Ecclesiastical History gives us our primary route into the early Anglo-Saxon world, yet the sources for our knowledge of the famous scholar-monk's life are sparse: his brief autobiographical note, which includes a list of his own writings; an account of his death by one of his pupils, Cuthbert; his correspondence, notably the letters he wrote to Egbert and Plegwin; his prefaces to his prose Life of Saint Cuthbert and to Book IV of his On First Samuel. These can be contextualized somewhat by other written sources, such as the anonymous Life of Ceolfrith and passages in the Anglo- Saxon Chronicle which are based upon earlier annals, and by archaeological excavations and the remains of the material culture of the age. But for deeper insight into Bede's personality and philosophy of life we are reliant upon close reading and analysis of the nuances of his own works, in various areas of study, and upon examination of those things most familiar to him: his home, the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, its buildings, fittings and artefacts and, most importantly, the books he so loved - those he consulted and those that he helped to produce in his roles as author, editor and scribe.

Three handbooks have been developed, in conjunction with a wide range of stakeholders to assist in the management of contaminated food production systems, inhabited areas and drinking water following a radiological incident. The handbooks are aimed at national and local authorities, central government departments and agencies, emergency services, radiation protection experts, the agriculture and food production sectors, industry and others who may be affected. The handbooks include management options for application in the different phases of an incident. Sources of contamination considered in the handbooks include nuclear accidents and radiological dispersion devices; the most relevant radionuclides are included. The handbooks are divided into several sections which provide supporting scientific and technical information; an analysis of the factors influencing recovery; compendia of comprehensive, state-of-the-art datasheets for around 100 management options and guidance on planning in advance. A decision-aiding framework comprising colour coded selection tables, look-up tables and decision trees and several worked examples are also included. The handbooks can be used as a preparatory tool, under non-crisis conditions, to engage stakeholders and to develop local and regional plans. The handbooks can also be applied as part of the decision-aiding process to develop a recovery strategy following an incident. In addition, the handbooks are useful for training purposes and during emergency exercises. To realise their full potential, the handbooks should be customised at national, regional and local levels.

The inclusion of children with disabilities into the regular education classroom has resulted in many studies on teacher attitudes. Current research has examined teacher beliefs about inclusion, their concerns, and issues pertaining to their ability to cater effectively for children with disabilities in their classrooms. Despite this, there appears to be little research investigating potential associations between teacher attitudes and beliefs toward inclusion, their education levels, and teacher training. This study investigated the attitudes and beliefs of 36 general and special education/early intervention teachers in Victoria. Results of the study show that teachers with higher educational qualifications in special education were more positive about inclusion.
